My Thoughts On Muramasa

by Matt Miller on Oct 06, 2009 at 05:42 AM

Most of my gaming free time in the last week or so has been devoted to Vanillaware’s gorgeous action/RPG. I’m about halfway through the game, and I find myself wondering why the Wii doesn’t have more similar titles. It’s one of the only times in the last six months that I’ve really enjoyed a game on that system.

I’m almost done with one of the two main character's story arcs. I won’t be the first person to tell you how awesome the art is on this project (it really is), but I’m equally impressed with the combat system, which is challenging and engrossing, without requiring a master’s degree to learn how to use. I’ve been rolling through on the harder difficulty setting, but I love how it lets you change that setting at any time if you frustrated; it’s a smart move by the developer, so players can try out the more strategic and challenging hard mode, but switch back partway through their playthrough if things get too crazy. Also, nobody makes boss encounters look quite so cool as Vanillaware.

Am I the only one who would pay real money to see a remake of Vanillaware’s Odin Sphere come to the Wii? Man, I loved that game, slowdown and all.
