I Screwed Up In 2009

by Matthew Kato on Jan 27, 2010 at 09:13 AM

I've already assembled my Top 10 list for 2009, but I'd like to go out of my way to point out a mistake I made on the list: there's no Assassin's Creed II. Of course, at the time I didn't put it on my list because I hadn't played it yet. Even though I'm only halfway through it at the moment, I feel pretty comfortable putting it on my list as one of my favorite titles of last year.

Unfortunately I never had time to play AC II before we had to turn in our lists, and I admit that starting the first Assassin's Creed but not finishing it due to lack of interest didn't exactly have me chomping at the bit to fire up AC II. What did pull me in, however, was the Italian Renaissance setting and the promise of more varied content. And on those fronts alone, Assassin's Creed II delivers in spades.

I'm spending a lot of time on non-essential story stuff like collecting the glyphs, the seals, and building up Monteriggioni because Ubisoft made these otherwise side diversions so interesting that I can't ignore them – a textbook way to take the age-old fetch quest and make it actually fun and important.

Of course, I'm also engrossed in the story, thrilled by the vicious assassinations, and (mostly) impressed with the acrobatic feats performed by Ezio. I say "mostly" because I think the platforming in AC II is usually fun to play, but it can definitely cause aggravation.

I almost didn't play Assassin's Creed II, but man am I sure glad I did. It might have made me look like a fool for not including it in my year-end top 10, but I'm used to that already.
