My Holiday Loot

Making a Splash

In my very first blog post on gameinformer.com (which you can read here if you're so inclined), I talked about how my newly acquired – and still beautiful, by the way – Link statue had ignited a new passion the likes of which I hadn't experienced since girls officially entered my world back in the 5th grade. Ok, maybe it's not that intense, but it really got me thinking as to what other video game characters I'd like to add to my so-called collection. Well thanks to my wife, er, I mean Santa, I received my second, equally impressive statue – the lovely Aerith Gainsborough.

A couple things to note about this beauty. First off, it's fairly impressive in person. The whole thing stands almost 17" tall and definitely has some heft to it thanks to the enormous base Aerith resides on. Secondly, the upper part containing Aerith and the White Materia actually detaches from the base itself. So upon receiving said statue, I had to attach Aerith to the base and almost broke off her braided pony tail in the process (thank God for super glue). Needless to say, Aerith herself is quite fragile. I have a feeling that the *** ponytail will screw me again at some point in the future. But all in all, another fine addition to my growing collection, wouldn't you say?

Dude, Why Are There Triangles on Your DS?

Being a December baby, I have the fortunate (or unfortunate, depending on how you look at it) luck of my birthday falling a mere 12 days before Xmas. A lot of the time such an arrangement usually means one occasion cannibalizes the other as far as presents are concerned. So if I get a pretty sweet gift for my birthday from a certain someone, chances are Xmas won't be nearly as bountiful, and vice versa. Not this year. See, I'm a DS newbie. I've never owned one, but I figured now was a good time as any to jump on board considering how many great DS and Game Boy Advance games there are for the system. And if you think this has nothing to do with Zelda, then shame on you. You don't know me at all. And with that, I give you my brand new Zelda-themed DS...

Isn't it great? And now my Zelda obsession only grows stronger. Who pays a premium (my wife, in this case) for a DS with a triforce on it when any other DS/DS Lite/DSi does the exact same thing, if not more? Any why didn't I ask for a DSi? This thing doesn't even have a camera. You know how cool it is to take pictures of people with your DSi. Or what about the forthcoming DSi XL? That thing is big enough to block out the sun.

Nope, slap a triforce on it and I'm sold. Pack in Phantom Hourglass and I'm willing to kill. Add to that the recent additions of Spirit Tracks and the GBA version of A Link to the Past and it's plain to see just how sick - sick with joy - I truly am. Let the healing begin.

The Anomalies

I'd be remiss if I didn't make mention of two other little gifts I received over the holidays as well. While these two items aren't as awe-inspiring as the aforementioned statue and DS, they are certainly "memorable" in their own right.

First up we have the monkey (or is it a gorilla?) that's offering up a banana. One of my favorite fruits by the way. Wind him up and he'll do flips across the table. How cute. I received this guy as part of the gift that eventually contained the Aerith statue. How these two things are related is beyond me. In one corner you have a happy-go-lucky animal doing flips with a banana while in the other you've got an Ancient focusing all of her might in one last attempt to save the planet from total destruction. It all makes sense.

He's still cute though.

And then we have this lady. I have no idea who she is or even what she is for that matter. A witch? A sorceress? An owl keeper? A woman who just loves all things that fly and large, pointy hats? My wife thought she was cute. Bless her heart. I suppose she's more like Aerith than the banana-toting monkey so that's a start. But who is she? For now, I'll just call her Owl Lady until proven otherwise.

A pretty good haul, don't you think?
