Obi-Wan Was Oversimplifying

I could say “this is surreal,” or “this is my dream,” or “this is…whatever else,” but I don’t want to jinx it.

My name is Camden. I’m a journalism student at the University of Missouri. Apart from a bad Persona 3: FES review I wrote for a personal blog in high school, I started writing about games less than a year ago.

I got lucky. The obviously-newsworthy first esports team sponsored by an all-women’s college happened to be just a five minute bike ride from the dorm (excuse me, “residence hall”) where I worked. I pitched a profile of this team to my Intermediate Writing professor at the beginning of the Fall 2017 semester. My professor hoped to connect me with experts on issues facing women in the gaming community, so he put me in touch with Sean Morrison, co-founder of Fangirl the Magazine. It just so happened that Morrison was no longer at Fangirl. Instead, he was an associate editor for ESPN Esports.

Now — just two published articles (and two yet-to-be-published articles), an application, and a Skype interview later — here I am. Like I said: pretty darn lucky, huh?

Five-or-so years ago, I decided that, at some point in my life, I wanted to write about video games for a living. Now, I may doing it for free, but I’m doing it at Game Informer. The significance of this opportunity — and the pressure it puts me under — is not lost on me. I’ll do everything I can to keep my momentum going.

Anyway, video games! They’re fun, and I like them! My favs are Sleeping Dogs, Star Wars: Knights Of The Old Republic 2, The Elder Scrolls 5: Skyrim, Mario Kart 8: Deluxe, The Legend Of Zelda: Breath Of The Wild, and Star Wars: Battlefront 2 (2005). I generally like RPGs and third-person action games.

Lately, I’ve been playing Donkey Kong: Tropical Freeze (because D.K. is the greatest video game character ever) and a lot of Hearthstone (but I’m very bad at it). Even though I still haven’t gotten my hands on a copy of God Of War yet, I did play a couple hours at a friend’s house, so you bet yourself I’m itching to beat up more wolves with Kratos’ bare hands.

I’m looking forward to hearing from you in the next three months, and to you hearing from me. I hope to bring you interesting and informative content.  Feel free to follow me on Twitter, and don’t hesitate to say hi.
