No Virtual Console Planned For Switch

by Matthew Kato on May 08, 2018 at 09:33 AM

In an email statement to Kotaku, Nintendo has confirmed that there are "currently no plans" to bring the Virtual Console to the Switch.

Yesterday Nintendo further detailed its September online service, including pricing, an NES Classic Games service, and cloud save info. NES – Nintendo Switch Online service is only available to Switch online subscribers, and is launching with 20 games, including Super Mario Bros. 3. Titles in the service include new features such as online multiplayer and voice chat (with the smartphone app).

Before the launch of the system there was some expectation of the Virtual Console on the Switch, but Nintendo would only say it would offer more info later.

Our Take
I'm personally torn on this one. One the one hand I'd rather play and look forward to new games for the system and don't see the temptation to buy old titles once again. However, on the consumer side this doesn't look good for Nintendo. It breaks from what previous Nintendo systems have offered, including the possibility of transferring previous purchases from your Wii to the Wii U, and cynically it seems designed to push people toward buying the NES and/or SNES Classic standalone units or signing up for an Switch online subscription instead.
