Nintendo Switch Still Accurately Tracking Play Time, Fix Coming In The Future

by Imran Khan on Mar 05, 2018 at 01:42 PM

As of the Switch's one-year anniversary, it had become pretty apparent that something was wrong with the activity counter. Now, Nintendo has acknowledged the issue and promised to fix it down the line.

A lot of fans were angry when they discovered that the Switch's playtime counter reset after one year and have been haranguing Nintendo's social media accounts with questions of how permanent this problem is, or whether the games being played now are being tracked. Some fans even insisted that they would not play their Switch if their playtime was not being tracked.

Today, Nintendo tweeted out assurances that playtime is indeed still being tracked.

"Some Nintendo Switch owners' play activity info is displaying incorrectly, but play activity is still being recorded accurately in the background," the company said on Twitter. "A future system update will resolve this issue & ensure play time data is correctly displayed. We apologize for the inconvenience."

Activity logs have been part of Nintendo's consoles since the 3DS, which had a much more robust counter and showed data and analysis rather than just a strict hour count. Nintendo have not clarified when the patch should be expected.

Our Take
While this seems like an odd thing to care about, it is interesting to know how much you play a game, and it is kind of baffling it broke in the first place. I wonder if Nintendo just never included a year in the playtime tracking.
