Star Trek Bridge Crew Drops VR Requirement

by Imran Khan on Dec 22, 2017 at 08:19 PM

Star Trek Bridge Crew, Ubisoft's virtual reality look into the crisis management of running a ship in Star Trek, can now be played without a VR headset.

The new update allows players to buck the VR headset requirement and mix and match with people who have one and people who don't. Much like earlier versions of the game, it can be played cross platform regardless of headset, so Vive, Oculus, and PlayStation VR users had always been able to play with each other. Now, Microsoft Mixed-Reality headset users and anyone with a TV screen that can run the game can also join in the fun.

As VR is no longer necessary for the game, the strain on the system allows for better graphics when not in VR mode. Developer Red Storm says high-end PCs using VR mode can also take advantage of these tweaks.

Bridge Crew is not the first VR game to jettison its virtual reality requirements, as EVE Valkyrie made a similar move earlier this year.

Star Trek Bridge Crew is available on PlayStation 4 and PC. You can read our review of the game right here.

Our View
This seemed like a game made for VR and without it, I wonder if there is much of a point. That said, I am more curious with the business decisions that went into this update and whether the VR base, even with complete and all-encompassing crossplay, is enough for the kind of games people want.
