Arika’s Upcoming Fighting Game Gets A Name, Beta Dates

by George Ash on Nov 15, 2017 at 12:45 PM

The game formerly known as “The Mysterious Fighting Game” now has an official name: Fighting EX Layer.

Fighting EX Layer is an off-shoot, of sorts, from the PlayStation-era Street Fighter EX games, sans all of the Street Fighter characters. The announcement of the game’s name comes after troubles in the naming process that caused delays, according to a post from Arika founder Akira Nishitani on the PlayStation Blog.

Nishitani also says a beta for the game will start following PlayStation Experience on December 11. The beta will last for two weeks and include six playable characters: Kairi, Garuda, Skullomania, Darun Mister, Allen Snider, and Shirase. Those attending PlayStation Experience will be able to play a demo version of the game before the beta begins.

The blog post also talks a bit about the game’s Gougi system, which are symbols that can be combined and change how characters play, from giving speed boosts to increasing super meter charge rates. Nishitana says he wants Gougi to change the flow of matches and give players different ways to play depending on the Gougi they select. Fighting EX Layer is set to release next year.

Our Take
The game looks really fun, but I still kinda like the working title Mysterious Fighting Game. The game will definitely be worth checking out during its beta next month, though.
