Nier Producer Confirms New Game In Series Has Begun Development

by Imran Khan on Nov 07, 2017 at 12:46 PM

In an interview with Dengeki PlayStation, Nier producer Yosuke Saito confirmed that development has begun on a new project.

In September, Square-Enix put up a recruitment page for a scenario writer for the Nier series. When asked about any new developments with the project in this week's upcoming Dengeki PlayStation, Saito commented, "Well, when it comes to a game, we’re making preparations in earnest for the setting, which you could probably have guessed due to the fact that we were recruiting a scenario planner."

Saito was also asked whether Yoko Taro is part of this new game. "He is… At least, I'd like to believe so (laughs). Taro-san says he will do anything as long as he gets paid for it, but there is no one else I know who doesn’t move for money as much as that man. He only wants to do whatever he wants to do. So I’ll try my best to explicitly say what he doesn’t want to do to guide him towards what I want to do (laughs)."

Square-Enix recently reported that Nier: Automata exceeded their expectations and stands as a franchise, indicating a strong push for a sequel is likely. It is unknown if Platinum Games is also involved with a new Nier title.

Our Take
It is a little surprising Square-Enix is moving so fast, but they seemingly want to strike when the iron is hot. Considering Automata has sold over two million copies, hopefully Square-Enix got what people liked about the game and does not try to smooth it out.
