Square-Enix Reports That Nier: Automata Has Exceeded Sales Expectations And Has Strong Potential As A Franchise

by Imran Khan on Sep 21, 2017 at 04:24 PM

Square-Enix's annual report has been released, which states and analyzes their business successes and failures over the past year. One quick mention of Nier: Automata will probably excite a lot of fans of the game.

"In addition, “NieR:Automata,” which we released in February 2017, has proven a global hit far in excess of our expectations. It has not only reminded the world of the high quality of Japanese games, but also demonstrated significant potential for future franchise development."

Yoko Taro, the fairly eccentric director of Nier and Drakengard, has always struggled to find success for his particular brand of humanity-damning games, with the most successful prior to Nier: Automata being the original Drakengard on PlayStation 2. The success of Nier: Automata must come as a surprise to Square-Enix, as the combination of Platinum and Taro did not guarantee high sales based on previous performance.

It sounds like Square-Enix is prepared to take the series further, which is good news for fans of the game, Yoko Taro, and Platinum.
