Madden Rules, Grand Theft Auto V Destroys, And Uncharted Hangs Out In August Game Sales

by Imran Khan on Sep 14, 2017 at 06:09 PM

The NPD Group, which tracks and publishes retail sales numbers, has released their numbers for the month of August 2017 and Madden has unsurprisingly ruled over every other game.

The big story, however, is that Grand Theft Auto V is above just about everything else, 49 months after release. We are not talking about small hitters here. Grand Theft Auto V is beating out every single Switch game, Uncharted: Lost Legacy, and, well, pretty much every other game out in August.

The sales of Grand Theft Auto V set records when it came out. It is destroying records now.

Here is the full list of the sales ranking, including physical and digital where participation from the publisher applies.

Madden NFL 18 1 Electronic Arts
Grand Theft Auto V 2 Take 2 Interactive (Corp)
Uncharted: The Lost Legacy 3 Sony (Corp)
Splatoon 2 4 Nintendo
The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild 5 Nintendo
Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six: Siege 6 Ubisoft
Mario Kart 8 7 Nintendo
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare Remastered 8 Activision Blizzard (Corp)
Crash Bandicoot: N. Sane Trilogy 9 Activision Blizzard (Corp)
Overwatch 10 Activision Blizzard (Corp)
Injustice 2 11 Warner Bros. Interactive
Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon: Wildlands 12 Ubisoft
Minecraft 13 Microsoft (Corp)
For Honor 14 Ubisoft
Call of Duty: Black Ops III 15 Activision Blizzard (Corp)
Agents Of Mayhem 16 Deep Silver
Forza Horizon 3 17 Microsoft (Corp)
Battlefield 1 18 Electronic Arts
NBA 2K17 19 Take 2 Interactive (Corp)
UFC 2 20 Electronic Arts

Notably, Agents of Mayhem did not make a particularly large splash after its August 15 release, and Uncharted: Lost Legacy did incredibly well considering it launched about a week later. Splatoon 2, Mario Kart 8, and The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild are still hanging on as the Switch's sales stalwarts, though ARMS has completely disappeared from the top 20.

Additionally, the Nintendo Switch claims the crown of the best selling platform for August, but PlayStation 4 remains the leader for 2017 so far.

Our Take
Grand Theft Auto V is a beast that cannot be stopped. It alone justifies Rockstar's stance on spacing the games so far apart, because there is no reason to rush when the previous game continues to sell forever.
