Sonic Mania launched last week to glowing reviews. Our own Brian Shea said that Mania is "a return to the series' roots in every sense, Sonic Mania is a joyful reminder why the franchise became such a hit in the first place."  The game launched on PC today. Unfortunately, it also launchd with the controversial copy-protection system Denuvo, meaning that it cannot be played offline.

Ars Technica editor Sam Machkovech made the discovery when he tried to play the game offline and was greeted with a message telling him he could not play if he wasn't logged into Steam online. As Machkovech notes, Sega is aware of the issue and is working on it, so hopefully there will be a fix soon.

For now, if you don't have access to a consistent online connection it might be best to hold off on grabbing a PC copy of Sonic Mania.
