Discord Rolling Out Video-Chat Test Today
Discord has established itself as an all-in-one voice-chat solution for PC gamers, but it's expanding to include streaming video. Starting today, the company says it's rolling out video chat to a small number of users to test its tech in advance of a wide release.
The test is limited to five percent of desktop users who had already signed up. If you weren't selected, that doesn't mean you're out of luck, however. The test will allow participants to make video calls with all Discord users, regardless of whether they were picked. Users can choose to share their screens or webcam feeds, and drag the video feed anywhere within the app.
Discord says a full release is, at a minimum, a month away, so you may want to be patient.
Once this is up and running, it could make competing providers like Skype much less appealing. If your friends are already using Discord for game chat, it makes sense to consolidate voice, video, and chat in one place – kind of like what Twitch just announced it's doing.
