The Witcher developer CD Projekt Red released a statement this morning that early design documents related to its upcoming, but mostly mysterious, Cyberpunk 2077 are currently being held for ransom by hackers.

How hackers were able to get their hands on the files is unclear, but CD Projekt Red is refusing to pay the ransom. In its statement, CD Projekt Red writes, “The documents are old and largely unrepresentative of the current vision for the game. Still, if you’re looking forward to playing Cyberpunk 2077, it would be best to avoid any information not coming directly from CD Projekt Red." Following up its statement, and looking toward the future, the developer also wrote, “When the time is right, you will hear about Cyberpunk 2077 from us – officially.”

Our Take
It's an odd situation to hear CD Projekt Red publicly airing this interaction with hackers, but I like how they're approaching it. They're basically saying, "Hey! Someone is holding our game hostage, but we're not letting them. So, just want to make sure you're wary of spoilers that might be leaking soon. Thanks!"
