Apple Partnering With Vive For VR Creation Tools

by Brian Shea on Jun 05, 2017 at 01:35 PM

During today's WWDC keynote, Apple brought engineers from Epic Games to the stage to demo new software that allows developers to create games using the technology of the HTC Vive. Using a newly announced external GPU, developers can access a beta version of SteamVR and the new MacOS to create content in VR.

The demo showcased developers creating a Star Wars VR experience from within the Vive. Everything from placing TIE Fighters to bringing Darth Vader into the picture was drag-and-drop using the motion-controlled wands. After creating the scene using ILM and Unity, the creator played the scene, which featured a TIE Fighter flyover and an Imperial Landing Craft coming in, and ended just as Darth Vader rushed toward the camera and swung his lightsaber.

Our Take
While many have speculated that Apple would jump into the ring with its own virtual reality headset, this is a step in the right direction for Mac users who want to use VR headsets with their machines.
