The New Mutants X-Men Movie Will Be...A Horror Film?!

by Craig Taylor on May 25, 2017 at 02:30 PM

The New Mutants film, which is scheduled to release in Spring 2018, is a bit different than your average comic book movie. It has no costumes, no supervillains, and takes a surprising thematic turn, according to director Josh Boone.

“We are making a full-fledged horror movie set within the X-Men universe,” Boone told Entertainment Weekly

Taking inspiration from Chris Claremont and Bill Sienkiewicz's New Mutants run, the film is darker in tone than the average the X-Men adventure. Sienkiewicz's impressionistic art style is something Boone was particularly influenced by and should give fans an idea of what to expect from the upcoming movie.

Maisie Williams (Game of Thrones' Arya Stark) is slated to star as Wolfsbane, and Anya Taylor-Joy (Split, The Witch) assumes the role of Magik, Colossus' Soulsword-wielding sister. According to EW, sources close to the production say that Henry Zaga (13 Reasons Why) is coming on to play Sunspot, and Rosario Dawson (Sin City, Daredevil) is currently in talks to join the cast as well.

The New Mutants is set to begin production in July and is aiming for a PG-13 rating.
