New Star Wars: The Last Jedi Characters Revealed

by Andrew Reiner on May 24, 2017 at 09:21 AM

Vanity Fair's "definitive preview" of Star Wars: The Last Jedi is available for reading online and from magazine racks. Writer David Kamp takes us deep behind the scenes and onto the sets of this highly anticipated film, introducing us to new characters, locations, and creatures along the way. Out of respect to Vanity Fair's exclusive, we are not including any images here, and urge you to read the exquisitely crafted story here, which includes over a dozen photographs from Annie Leibovitz.

The story confirms a number of rumors that have been floating around the Star Wars community. Actor Benicio Del Toro plays a new character named "DJ." This odd name apparently speaks to who the character is, but The Last Jedi director Rian Johnson wouldn't elaborate on the inspiration other than saying, "there's a reason why we call him DJ." The image of Del Toro shows him in a dirty control room. He's wearing what appears to be a trench coat, boots, and appears to have a weapon fastened to his leg.

Laura Dern's role in the film is also confirmed. She is playing a "prominent officer" in the Resistance named Vice Admiral Holdo, a character we see in an extravagant gown, dressed for what many suspect is a regal party held on a new planet called Canto Bight. This is the rumored casino city, which Johnson calls, "a Star Wars Monte Carlo–type environment, a little James Bond–ish, a little To Catch a Thief."

Vanity Fair's article does a nice job of framing Johnson's mindset for the film, which sounds much different than any Star Wars story to date.
