Tom Brady Is The Madden NFL 18 Cover Star

The many accomplishments of New England Patriots' quarterback Tom Brady (including winning the Super Bowl a record five times) makes him the best at his position to ever play the game. And now he can add one more accolade to that list – Madden NFL cover star.

Amidst the celebration, however, is the black cloud of the Madden Cover Curse, which states that whomever appears on the cover will suffer a major injury, sub-par season, or worse (!) that season and possibly even beyond. To assess the possible legitimacy of the curse, Brady need look no further than teammate and Madden 17 cover athlete Rob Gronkowski, who was in and out of the lineup last season with various injuries before being placed on injured reserve after week 12.

Brady, however, isn't phased by the possibility of a curse. "The Madden NFL 18 cover is a great honor for me," he said in a press release, "especially since I have been playing the game since growing up next to EA headquarters in the Bay Area. I'm not one to believe in curses, so I'm ready to take the challenge head on like always! It doesn't stand a chance!"

Despite never having appeared on the cover for Madden, this isn't Brady's first time gracing the cover of a football video game. Way back in 2002 Brady appeared for NFL GameDay 2003, a now-defunct first-party series for PlayStation platforms. That year GameDay was trounced by competitors NFL 2K3 and Madden NFL 2003, which starred Rams running back Marshall Faulk on the cover. Faulk only started 10 games during that season, which was the beginning of the end of his career.

Knowing Brady, he'll use that GameDay experience as motivation to go out and have an awesome season...

In other Madden 18 news, EA Sports announced pre-order info for the game's standard and G.O.A.T. editions. Standard edition pre-orders come with the choice of an Elite Madden Ultimate Team player and five squad packs for redemption at launch. G.O.A.T. pre-orders, meanwhile, receive the standard edition stuff as well as an additional G.O.A.T. MUT player and more. Finally, the G.O.A.T. edition also grants owners three-day early access.

Madden NFL 18 comes out for PlayStation 4 and Xbox One on August 25.
