Report: New Thief Game And Movie Adaptation In The Works
You might want to get ready for not only a new entry in the Eidos' Thief franchise, but also a movie adaptation to go along with it.
According to film production company Straight Up Films, a new game for the series is in development alongside a film. This marks the fifth game in the series, which got its start over fifteen years ago. Straight Up Films' website listed the following about the film: "Steeped in the steam-punk world created by the video game, the film will tell a new chapter in the storied world of the series’ hero."
The action adventure film is being written by Adam Mason and Simon Boyes, who worked together on Misconduct starring Anthony Hopkins and Al Pacino.
While we have yet to hear official confirmation from Square or Eidos on the matter, the biggest news here is another Thief game. We've reached out to Square for comment and will update the story should we hear back.
The last Thief game, which launched back in 2014, was met with mixed reviews, ranging from a 67 to 70 on Metacritic between all platforms. Our own Ben Reeves had this to say about it, "Eidos-Montreal may have adhered too closely to the series’ roots, resulting in a reboot that suffers from classic problems like simplistic combat and trial-and-error sneaking missions. However, locked behind this old-school game design is a gem that stealth fans should eye up for their collection."

Our Take
I wonder if we'll hear more about the next entry at this E3. I would think so based on this information coming out now. The 2014 reboot had its flaws, but hopefully, Eidos has had time to hone its craft and learn from those shortcomings. The series was so influential that I hate to see it go away, so I'm on board for them to give it another go. Let's hope we find out more info soon. As for the movie, we all know by now that movie adapations of video games rarely turn out great, but that doesn't mean we can't hope for the best.
