Risk Of Rain Sequel In The Works, Moving The Action To 3D

by Jeff Cork on May 09, 2017 at 09:53 AM

Risk of Rain dropped players in procedurally generated worlds, giving them one life – and little instruction – with which to discover and defeat a series of bosses. The indie game got a solid reception (including a 7.5 from our own Ben Reeves), and developer Hopoo Games has announced that a sequel is in the works.

Unlike the first game, which used a retro 8-bit-style aesthetic, the sequel is being designed with 3D worlds. According to the official blog post, the change adds to the scale and atmosphere of exploration, and the result is also more stable than the first game.

The game has been in development for six months now, and the team is quick to point out that elements that they're showing are still in flux. If you're interested in watching how a game comes into shape, it might be worth bookmarking the blog and checking in from time to time.

Our Take
The novelty of contemporary games with old-school graphics has long since worn off for me, and I'm happy to see an indie dev move away from that style. Whether or not that shift translates into fun gameplay remains to be seen, however, and that's ultimately what really matters.
