Final Fantasy XV's Upcoming Magitek Exosuits Delayed Due To Power Rangers Similarity

by Kimberley Wallace on Feb 03, 2017 at 01:31 PM

Square Enix recently held an Active Time Report livestream for Final Fantasy XV, revealing its upcoming free DLC including the Magitek Exosuits must be delayed. The Magitek Exosuits, which give you invincibility and improve your fishing skills, were set to hit on February 21, but this free Booster Pack DLC has to be pushed back due to their resemblance to the Power Rangers' suits.

According to Kotaku's translation, marketing manager Akio Ofuji confirmed that Square was contacted by the owners of the Power Rangers IP about the similarities, making Square reevaluate the design. In the end, the team decided to redo it. Director Hajime Tabata also added that the designers didn't intend to mimic the franchise and didn't realize it came across that way until the costumes were shown off and people made the Power Rangers comparison.

Earlier this week, Square Enix unveiled the Magitek Exosuits with news of an upcoming Gladio DLC and improvements to Chapter 13 coming at the end of March.

Our Take
I'm guessing Square wants to avoid a lawsuit here, so changing them is in its best interest. Many times designers don't realize when things look similar until it's pointed out to them, which seems to be the case here. After all, we're all inspired by things we see and know in our world. But it's hard not to get a Power Rangers vibe from the designs, especially if you look at the poster for the upcoming movie adaptation.
