The Next Star Wars Film Is Called 'The Last Jedi'

by Andrew Reiner on Jan 23, 2017 at 04:18 AM

Many Star Wars fans thought Lucasfilm would wait until April's Star Wars Celebration to reveal the official title for Star Wars: Episode VIII, but the studio decided against a dramatic unveiling, and instead revealed the name on Twitter. The film is called Star Wars: The Last Jedi, and it opens in theaters on December 15.

The name is obviously focused on Luke Skywalker, but it also may talk about the path Rey goes on. Is she turning her back on becoming a Jedi, or will she become the last Jedi? If she's the last Jedi, what does that mean for Luke? The film reunites The Force Awakens' cast of Daisy Ridley, Adam Driver, Mark Hamill, and Carrie Fisher, and welcomes Benicio Del Toro and Laura Dern.

The timing of the name reveal may mean a trailer debuts during the Super Bowl on February 5. We'll likely learn more soon. Until then, what do you think of the name?
