Switch Lands Atlus' Shin Megami Tensei And A New RPG From Square Enix

by Andrew Reiner on Jan 12, 2017 at 05:03 PM

At today's Nintendo Switch Presentation, a cryptic teaser trailer running Unreal 4 was later revealed to be a new entry in Atlus' Shin Megami Tensei series. The teaser shows Atlus' logo spray painted on a pillar decorated with roses. The camera pans to the right to show a rundown building; the floor is torn up, the ceiling is falling apart, yet roses are growing here. As the camera continues panning, and rose petals fly, we dozens of glowing eyes in the darkness. Their demonic forms are quickly revealed. Many are familiar faces from the Shin Megami Tensei series.

After the trailer played, a Nintendo representative revealed development had just started on this new title in the series, which is celebrating its 25th anniversary.

The video then transitioned to a Square Enix logo and a game called Project Octopath Traveler, which gave way to a map, rich in waterfronts named Water Dragon Bay, Swan Lake, and Sea of Chance. The next shot is of actual gameplay, showing 3D, storybook-like backdrops with characters roaming the streets. The characters almost look like 2D cutouts. We see a few characters in a dungeon, and a combat sequence pitting a party of three against a huge knight on a horse. The battle system looks classic in design, and may be turn-based.

No release dates were given for either title. Nintendo Switch ships worldwide on March 3.
