PS4 Sales Push Past 50 Million Worldwide

by Jeff Cork on Dec 07, 2016 at 03:46 AM

Days after hosting its PlayStation Experience show, Sony has more to crow about. The company has revealed that the PlayStation 4 has sold more than 50 million units worldwide to consumers.

Those numbers include the new PS4 Pro and Slim versions of the console, and Sony didn't break down the figure further between the various hardware SKUs. Regardless, the sales reflect sell-through to consumers, and not inventory that's been shipped to retailers and is currently keeping shelves warm.

In addition to the hardware numbers, Sony said that more than 369.6 million games have been sold for the console since launch, between retail and digital, which works out to about seven games per console.

To put the hardware number into perspective, it took the PS3 about four and a half years to hit that figure. The PlayStation 4 has done it in a little over three years.

Our Take
That's a nice round number, and an impressive feat by any measure. Now they have to sell 105 million more to catch up to the PlayStation 2.
