What To Watch This Weekend: The PlayStation Experience, The Smash Open, And The Boston Major

by Suriel Vazquez on Dec 03, 2016 at 04:40 AM

This is going to be a good weekend to watch games, play games, and learn about games. While all eyes will be on PSX to see what sorts of big announcements (fingers crossed for Marvel Vs. Capcom 4!) will be at the show, there's a lot of big events that will be coming to a head this weekend.

While it's not the enormous, community-driven spectacle of Evo, Capcom Cup could be the most intense Street Fighter tournament of the year. Its 32 entrants have all earned their way into the tournament by doing well at other events throughout the year, and its enormous first-placce $120,000 prize (plus money from some of Street Fighter V's DLC) should assure players bring their A-game. (Stream / Schedule)

Of course, Capcom is nestled within the PlayStation Experience, which should have a number of big, PlayStation-related announcements streamed live, as well as a showcase and panels. (Stream / Schedule)

Also at PSX will be the Call of Duty Invitational, the first LAN event for Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare. The tournament will feature eight teams competing for a $20,000 prize. (Stream)

In other fighting game event news, The UGC Smash Open will feature all of your favorite Super Smash Bros. Players competing in both Super Smash Bros. Melee and the Wii U version, in both one-versus-one and two-versus-two brackets for both. (Stream / Schedule)

Dota 2's big winter tournament, The Boston Major, will also take place this weekend. The qualifiers are done, the teams are set, and the single-elimination bracket will determine who will take the lion's share of its $3,000,000 prize pool. (Stream / Schedule)

If PC MOBAs aren't your thing, the Vainglory World Championship is also this weekend, and will see top teams face off in the mobile game. (Stream / Schedule)

Overwatch's APEX tournament season in Korea also wraps up this weekend, and the winning team will walk away with $90,000. (Stream)

Meanwhile, the Counter-Strike Eleague's second season wraps up this weekend, and will be broadcast on both TBS and Twitch. (Stream / Schedule)

We also have the Rocket League Championship Series this weekend, which will have the world's eight best Rocket League teams face off for a $120,000 prize. (Stream / Schedule)

That's it for this weekend! Let us know if we missed any tournaments you'd like to see covered in the comments.
