Reader Discussion – What Is The Most Innovative Game Of The Generation Thus Far?

by Matt Bertz on Nov 24, 2016 at 04:00 AM

We are three years removed from the introduction of the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One, consoles that promised dramatic increases in power, improved online infrastructure (at least in theory), and more tools than ever to share gaming experiences. Since then, we've seen a steady stream of familiar game licenses along with a much smaller collection of new game properties like Titanfall, Destiny, and Overwatch.

Gamers have no shortage of good experiences to choose from, but which game is doing the most to move the medium forward with new modes, new experiences, and new technology? That's a tough question to answer. The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt rose the bar for side quest storytelling. Destiny created a new hybrid shooting experience that seamlessly merges cooperative and competitive play and brings the group raids previously reserved to PC based MMOs into the console space. Grand Theft Auto Online, which originally released for Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3, is still evolving in meaningful ways on the new consoles, continually offering new ways for players to group up in Los Santos.

The Game Informer office has no true consensus, so we're interested in hearing your thoughts on the matter. Which game this generation do you feel has made the most impact on the future of the medium? Share your thoughts in the comments section below!
