Overwatch: First Strike Graphic Novel Canceled

by Kimberley Wallace on Nov 18, 2016 at 10:31 AM

Today, lead writer Michael Chu issued an update on the graphic novel Overwatch: First Strike. The team has decided to take the story in another direction, scrapping the project entirely. It is officially canceled.

"The original idea for the graphic novel dates back to the early days of the game's development and came from our desire to tell the story of the founding of Overwatch during the Omnic Crisis," Chu writes in a post on the Overwatch Forums."In the years since First Strike's conception, we have done a lot of development on the universe and its stories. While the core of this story remains, we have changed and expanded upon how we see the events that took place during the first days of Overwatch."

The graphic novel was supposed to tell the story of Gabriel Reyes, Jack Morrison, Ana Amari, Reinhardt Wilhelm, Torbjörn Lindholm's early days. The silver lining is that Chu says it's still a story they plan to tell at some point.

Our Take
I know many people are excited to learn more about Overwatch's lore. While this is disappointing news, it's not like the door is closed on the project entirely. I like that Chu is up front about how things have changed since the graphic novel was first in development. Better to start again than release something that doesn't match with the Overwatch world we've come to know and love.
