Final Fantasy XV To Receive Mobile MMO Spin-Off

by Matt Miller on Nov 07, 2016 at 11:07 AM

Square Enix and Machine Zone today bring us word of a new cooperative project between the two companies – a mobile MMO rooted in the world of Final Fantasy XV. Machine Zone (also known as MZ) has found significant financial success in the free-to-play mobile market with games like Game of War: Fire Age, even as Square Enix has continued to explore various mobile options within the Final Fantasy universe, including recent releases like Final Fantasy: Brave Exvius, Justice Monsters Five, and Mobius Final Fantasy

We haven’t learned much info about this new project, including a name or details about gameplay. However, an initial press release about the game reports that the game will “combine the characters, storyline, and soundtrack from Final Fantasy XV with Machine Zone’s technology, which allows millions of people around the world to play together in a single universe in real time."

No matter what emerges about this new mobile spin-off, we don't have long to wait for its parent game; Final Fantasy XV releases on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One on November 29. You can check out our video showing off many of the game's early activities to learn more.

Our Take
Final Fantasy mobile games have often either been highly priced compared to their competitors, or employed distasteful free-to-play elements that have warded me away from what was on offer. Here’s hoping this new project finds a balance, and takes advantage of the rich setting of Final Fantasy XV. Based on this early info, I’m withholding any judgment until I learn more.
