Google Announces Daydream View VR Release Date For Next Week

by Suriel Vazquez on Nov 02, 2016 at 07:55 AM

Though many of the specifications for Google's Daydream VR (which uses your phone as its screen) were revealed last month, the date was simply left at "November."

Today Google has announced its VR device will launch on November 10. Units will only be available at certain stores depending on the country, however. The stores, pricing, and regions break down as follows:

  • Australia: Telstra, JB Hi-Fi; $119 (AUD)
  • Canada: Bell, Rogers, Telus, Best Buy; $99 (CAD)
  • Germany: Deutsche Telekom; €69 (EUR)
  • United Kingdom: EE, Carphone Warehouse; £69 (GBP)
  • United States: Verizon, Best Buy; $79 (USD)

Google also laid out its plans for software, including games that will be available for its headset "over the next few weeks." In its post, the company mentioned:

  • Danger Goat
  • Gunjack 2: End of Shift
  • Home Run Derby
  • Hunters Gate
  • Mekorama
  • Need For Speed: No Limits VR
  • Wonderglade

Google also laid out a number of non-game uses for the device, including virtual reality renditions of The New York Times and The Wall Street Journal, an animated film called Invasion!, and the ability to look through Google Street View in VR.

Our Take
Although the launch window (the specific dates of which seem murky in the blog post) includes a number of games, it's telling that Google promoted several non-gaming uses for the device first. They may be targeting the device as more of a consumer jack-of-all-trades device instead of a something for hardcore gamers. Considering the headset's low price point (not including the price of the phone, of course), they may have more success that way.
