Bethesda Puts Brakes On PS4 Mod Support

Bethesda opened the gates to console mods for Fallout 4, letting Xbox One players take advantage of tweaks, enhancements, and overhauls from the PC community. PlayStation 4 players were in line for mod support, too, but Bethesda has just announced – citing Sony's approval process – that those plans have now been shelved.

Bethesda posted the following on its site:

After months of discussion with Sony, we regret to say that while we have long been ready to offer mod support on PlayStation 4, Sony has informed us they will not approve user mods the way they should work: where users can do anything they want for either Fallout 4 or Skyrim Special Edition.

Like you, we are disappointed by Sony’s decision given the considerable time and effort we have put into this project, and the amount of time our fans have waited for mod support to arrive. We consider this an important initiative and we hope to find other ways user mods can be available for our PlayStation audience. However, until Sony will allow us to offer proper mod support for PS4, that content for Fallout 4 and Skyrim on PlayStation 4 will not be available.

We will provide an update if and when this situation changes.

Mod support was slated for release on PlayStation 4 several months ago, but it was delayed. Now we have a better sense of why that was. 

We've reached out to Sony for comment, and will update the story if we receive any additional information.


Our Take
Mod support was a big success on Xbox One, at least initially, and it's disappointing to see that it won't be coming to PlayStation 4. Obviously, Sony has an interest in maintaining standards on its platform, but it's a bitter pill to swallow considering the mod presence on competing platforms. Hopefully, Sony and Bethesda can come up with a solution.
