Reader Discussion: What Games (If Any) Have Lived Up To Your Pre-Launch Hype Expectations?

by Mike Futter on Aug 07, 2016 at 04:46 AM

While there are many different discussion threads about No Man's Sky, one that keeps emerging is about "hype." Whether its because developers set expectations or fans build games up in the black box of possibilty (or, most likely, a combination), pre-launch expectations for big games are always lofty.

We're curious about which games you've had the most excitement for and if any have lived up to it. Who is responsible for creating hype, and how should it be managed in the lead-up to release.

If a game fails to live up to your expectations, how do you react and where does the "blame" lie? Is it purely the developer at fault, or do fans have a role in putting games on pedestals before they even play them?

How does hype impact how you purchase games? And if a title doesn't line up with your pre-launch perception, how (if at all) does it impact how you approach the genre, developer, or franchise moving forward?

Let us know what you think in the comments.
