Diablo Game Director Josh Mosqueira Departs Blizzard

by Mike Futter on Jul 05, 2016 at 03:39 AM

Last week, Blizzard posted a job listing for a new game director for the Diablo series. That raised questions about the current team, including director Josh Mosqueira.

According to a statement received by Polygon, the listing follows Mosqueira's decision to depart the studio. "With Diablo III in a good place at this point, Josh felt that now was a good time to pursue other opportunities with minimal impact to the team," Blizzard told the publication. "We'll be filling the director role either from within Blizzard or externally."

Diablo III got off to a rough start when it was released in 2012. At the time, the game featured a real money and in-game currency auction house. This incentivized account hacking, making Sanctuary a perilous place.

With the release of the Reaper of Souls expansion, the Loot 2.0 update, and the removal of the auction houses, Diablo III grew into the game many fans had hoped it would be at launch. Diablo III has now sold more than 30 million copies.

Our Take
Mosqueira led the Diablo team in one of the biggest comeback stories in gaming history. Diablo III was a disaster at launch and has since become an immensely enjoyable experience with the addition of seasons and new play modes. I’m eager for another expansion and the next installment.
