System Shock Remake Launches Its Kickstarter, Gets A New Demo

by Blake Hester on Jun 29, 2016 at 09:42 AM

Developer Nightdive studios launched both a Kickstarter campaign and a new demo for its upcoming remake of the 1994 game, System Shock, today. The former, so far, is doing extremely well.

System Shock's Kickstarter is asking for $900,000 by July 28. According to Nightdive, reaching this goal would ensure "modern" controls and inventory management, new puzzles, difficulty modes, and updated-yet-faithful levels. Certain stretch goals include a full orchestral score, enemy dismemberment, and an expanded narrative. It has already received over $451,000 of its goal a little under 24 hours after its launch.

Nightdive has also launched a brief "proof of concept" demo of the game avaliable on Steam, GOG, and the Humble Store. You can check out some screenshots, concept art, and the game's collector's edition in the gallery below.

No release date has been given for the game, but its Kickstarter points to December 2017 for backer rewards delivery. It's expected to come to PC, Mac, Linux, and Xbox One. You can check out two minutes of pre-alpha footage released back in March.

Our Take: In the wake of some fairly dubious Kickstarter campaigns,  it'll be interesting to see how System Shock pans out. Though, at least right now, it seems like Nightdive is on the right path, offering an early demo to incentivise potential backers. I think if the developer remains this transparent with such a beloved property, it stands a good chance of winning over the fans of a 22-year-old game.
