Microsoft Halting Development Of Xbox One TV DVR Feature

by Matthew Kato on Jun 08, 2016 at 01:02 PM

At Gamescom last year, Microsoft announced that in 2016 you'd be able to use the Xbox One as a DVR to record over-the-air TV. That functionality is now all but dead.

In a statement to The Verge, Microsoft said: "After careful consideration, we've decided to put development of DVR for over-the-air TV on hold to focus our attention on launching new, higher fan-requested gaming experiences across Xbox One and Windows 10."

In the spring of 2015, over-the-air tuners were released, and the DVR functionality would have enabled users to schedule recordings and watch them on Windows mobile devices and PCs.

Our Take
Unfortunate for this to happen, but if the time and resources are put into other gaming initiatives, then that's great. Although I don't think many fans are requesting more Windows 10 integration (don't you love how Windows 10 was tacked onto Microsoft's statement?!). I think they just want a steady stream of good first-party games.
