Rocket League Xbox One/PC Cross-Platform Play Launches Today

by Mike Futter on May 24, 2016 at 03:04 AM

Xbox One Rocket League players now have a larger pool of potential competitors. Psyonix has announced that cross-platform play is coming today.

With the PlayStation 4 version supporting cross-platform play since launch, this opens the door for truly open competition between rival platforms. When we spoke with Sony’s Adam Boyes at GDC, he suggested that if developers and publishers want this feature that the platform holder would be open to it.

While Psyonix isn’t touting Xbox One-to-PS4 cross-play today, we’ll find out later this afternoon if the wall between consoles is crumbling. You’ll be able to play with your new friends starting at 6 p.m. Eastern / 3 p.m. Pacific today.

Our Take
Fans have been clamoring for true cross-platform play between major consoles for years. I was in the “never gonna happen” camp because of business reasons. But if the walls are coming down and Microsoft and Sony decide to address the challenges (friends lists, security concerns, etc.), it’s a major win for gamers. It also means that the landscape could change drastically, with exclusives becoming that much more important.
