United States Residents Can Now Sign Up To Field Test Pokémon Go

by Mike Futter on May 16, 2016 at 10:35 AM

After two months of field testing in Japan, United States, Australia, and New Zealand-based Pokémon trainers can now start their quest to be the very best. Registration is open for Pokémon Go field testing here in the States.

All you need is a Gmail address and a mobile device. If you happen to play Niantic Labs’ other game, Ingress, you can add your agent ID and level, though this is optional.

Since this is a beta test, registration doesn’t guarantee you’ll get early access. The notice suggests that eligible players are being invited now, so the turnaround time might be quick if you happen to be lucky. You can register here.

Our Take
The Pokémon Company has a big opportunity here to create an experience that it can monetize for years to come. The gameplay needs to be compelling, timed events need to pull people in, and the monetization needs to be both fair and valuable. I’m eager to see how Niantic Labs and The Pokémon Company pull it all together.
