Sega: We Would Love To Release Shenmue 1 And 2 HD ‘Tomorrow’

by Mike Futter on May 12, 2016 at 10:37 AM

With Shenmue 3 funded via Kickstarter and in development right now, fans have been wondering about revisiting the older titles. Unfortunately, Sega (which is not directly involved in the Shenmue 3 project) doesn’t have anything definite to share right now.

The good news is that the company says it wants to release HD versions of the first two games in the series. However, there are some complications.

“With regards to Shenmue 1 and 2 HD, we would love to release these tomorrow,” says Sega Europe community manager Dan Sheridan. “Sadly, it’s not as simple as porting the games to the current platforms, as we would need to ensure that the quality of any HD remaster lives up to the quality of the original titles. With games as immersive as Shenmue 1 and 2, there are further complications from licensed products that were included in the original games. That said, we’d love to do it and are currently investigating how to make it a reality.”

So, no promises, but Sega clearly hears your cries, Shenmue fans. Not sure what all the fuss is about? We played all of Shenmue just for you. Check it out.

Our Take
Whether listening turns into doing is in part up to fans. Tackling the HD remakes needs to make financial sense, especially given the licensing complications.
