Microsoft Universal Windows Platform Finally Lets You Unlock Frame Rate

by Mike Futter on May 10, 2016 at 03:35 AM

If you have a video card and monitor that support either AMD FreeSync or Nvidia G-Sync, you may have noticed you can’t take full advantage of the tech in Windows 10's Universal Windows Platform games. That changes today.

FreeSync and G-Sync technologies link up the monitor refresh rate to the frame rate to reduce or entirely eliminate screen tearing, stutter, and input lag. You’ll be able to take advantage of that starting today as support rolls out.

Additionally, you’ll be able to fully unlock the frame rate in UWP games. Unfortunately, though the underlying technology is being pushed through, developers will still need to test and implement it in their own games.

Our Take
Until UWP catches up with core functionality present on Steam and other distribution platforms, the PC gaming community isn’t likely to fall in love. With the vocal outcry against the UWP approach still in progress, Microsoft needs to accelerate its progress and make real effort to demonstrate it’s listening to developers and gamers.
