Alan Moore and Brian Bolland's Batman: The Killing Joke graphic novel from 1988 is revered as a "must-read" story for all Batman fans. The story is so brutal at times that to do it justice as a film, Warner Bros. Animation made it R-rated.

Some of the shots from the full trailer (which you can view below) are identical to the panels in the graphic novel, which gives us insight into The Joker's origin story and his relationship with Batman. Kevin Conroy and Mark Hamill reprise their roles as Batman and The Joker respectively, and Tara Strong is once again Batgirl, a central figure in this story.

Batman: The Killing Joke doesn't have a release date other than 2016 as of this writing, but will debut in July at San Diego Comic Con.
