Microsoft Announces It Will Stop Manufacturing New Xbox 360 Consoles

by Mike Futter on Apr 20, 2016 at 05:56 AM

It’s time to say goodbye to an old friend. Microsoft announced today that after more than a decade, the Xbox 360’s manufacturing run is over.

The company will sell-through its remaining inventory. After that, your chances of finding one will be relegated to leftover stock and pre-owned hardware.

“Xbox 360 means a lot to everyone in Microsoft,” writes head of Xbox Phil Spencer. “And while we’ve had an amazing run, the realities of manufacturing a product over a decade old are starting to creep up on us. Which is why we have made the decision to stop manufacturing new Xbox 360 consoles.”

For those that already own an Xbox 360, service will continue as normal. Online gaming, Games with Gold, and party support will go on. Servers will remain online and hardware will be officially supported. Games and accessories will still be sold at retail for the time being.

Our Take
I’ve owned an absurd number of Xbox 360 consoles due to the red ring of death and other issues. Despite that, it was my platform of choice last generation, and I have many fond memories.
