Square Enix Cancels Free-To-Play Legacy Of Kain Spinoff Nosgoth

Psyonix and Square Enix have announced that the free-to-play Legacy of Kain spinoff Nosgoth is bleeding out. The game has been canceled, with full shutdown planned for the end of May.

“It is with a heavy heart and an immense sense of sadness that we must announce the end of Nosgoth’s development,” the developer announced today. “Servers will continue to run until 31st May 2016, during which time you will be able to play the game as normal. After that date, Nosgoth will be taken offline for the last time.”

Anyone who made a purchase in the game since March 1 will be refunded automatically. They should arrive within two weeks. 

No additional updates for the game will be planned and the esports partnership with ESL will cease after April. An FAQ on the announcement says that fans of the Legacy of Kain series should know that this decision doesn’t have any bearing on the future of the franchise.

Despite this turn of events, Psyonix has found success in other avenues. Rocket League continues to build a huge community, with the game now on three platforms and may completely change how we play online with one another via cross-platform support.

Our Take
As a fan of the Legacy of Kain series, I’m sorry to hear this didn’t pan out. It may have reinvigorated interest in a franchise reboot.

That said, amidst a sea of free-to-play arena games, Nosgoth didn’t receive much promotion after release. It’s hard to build and maintain a community for a game like this unless the drum is beaten often and loudly.
