Nintendo's First Mobile App, Miitomo, And My Nintendo Service Available Today

by Mike Futter on Mar 31, 2016 at 04:47 AM

The Miitomo app, Nintendo's first foray into mobile publishing, is available now in North America on iOS and Android devices. Along with it, you can now take advantage of the My Nintendo rewards service.

Miitomo is a conversation app, and not a game per se. Nintendo says it hopes that it fosters interaction among friends as players answer questions about themselves that are delivered via the Mii characters.

My Nintendo allows you to also earn different types of coins for completing activities. Just like with Club Nintendo, you'll get gold coins for purchasing digital games (physical copies seem to be left out, at least for now). Different pricing rewards different coin amounts, ranging from 10 to 80.

You can also earn Miitomo coins from completing activities in the app. Platinum coins are awarded for a variety of actions, including signing into the eShop and Miiverse each week and linking your social media accounts.

Rewards include Miitomo costumes, game discounts, full game downloads, DLC, 3DS themes, and a special version of Picross with a The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess theme. You can register for a My Nintendo account on the site and download Miitomo from the App Store and Google Play Store.

Our Take
Whether Nintendo's first app has what it takes to keep people hooked is a big question. I don't see many people talking about Tomodachi Life anymore, and that might be the biggest indicator we have about Miitomo's long-term changes. Bring on the real games, Nintendo.
