Preview To Turn Your Xbox One Into A Dev Kit Is Available Today

by Kyle Hilliard on Mar 30, 2016 at 06:42 AM

During Microsoft's annual Build Developer Conference event (which generally focuses more on the non-gaming side of Microsoft) head of Xbox Phil Spencer took to the keynote stage to talk about its PC gaming plans and offer some details about the future of Xbox One.

A feature that was promised early in the Xbox One's life was the ability to turn any Xbox One into a dev kit. That feature is finally coming as early as today with a preview of the dev mode already available. On stage, Microsoft detailed the ability by showcasing how users will be able to switch to dev mode, and back to retail mode on their console. Dev Mode Activation will be an app you can download from the Xbox One's store, along with an app called Dev Home, and once you're all registered as a developer, you will be able to use the app to switch back and forth. Microsoft also showed how you could send the application (or game) you are working on remotely to your Xbox One meaning you don't necessarily need to be next to the console in order to developer for it, and praised its Universal Windows Platform for being able to take care of the minutiae, like registering what type of input you're using, controller or otherwise.

The full release will come alongside WIndows 10's Anniversary update, which is still in the process up being dated, but Spencer promised more details will be available in June during E3.

Additionally, Spencer also said Cortana, Microsoft's Siri-like voice control system, will be coming to Xbox One soon. You will also be able to disable V-Sync soon for Windows PC gaming, and support for G-Sync and Freesync options will be added, as well.
