Far Cry Primal Getting Survivor Mode In Free Update

by Joe Juba on Mar 30, 2016 at 07:41 AM

As if the prehistoric world of Far Cry Primal wasn't already hazardous enough, a new mode is coming on April 12 that offers a more hardcore experience – including an option for permadeath.

Announced via the Ubiblog, the Survivor mode will be released at no cost on all platforms. It has permadeath options that players can toggle, but also adds other features that add a more realistic spin on your exploration. For instance, Takkar now has a stamina gauge to manage, he is more susceptible to cold, and the mini-map is turned off. Even things like crafting and fast-travel are made a bit more weighty, forcing players to be more thoughtful and deliberate with their actions. Ubisoft's blog posts goes into greater detail about exactly which mechanics are affected and how.

Survivor mode isn't an entirely separate difficulty level; all of its features are layered over whatever difficulty you select.

If you think this sounds like a great fit for Far Cry, you aren't alone. We talked to the creative director of Far Cry 4, Alex Hutchinson, about the possibility of a survival mode in that title during our Far Cry 4 special-edition podcast

Our Take
The Far Cry series' increased focus on exploration, crafting, and hunting seems to fold into these kinds of options perfectly. This is the right approach to post-launch support; the team clearly listened to the game's fans when planning the addition, and is giving to them at no extra cost.
