5th Cell Confirms Layoffs After Canceled Scribblenauts Project

by Kimberley Wallace on Mar 21, 2016 at 02:13 PM

5th Cell, the development team behind the popular Scribblenauts franchise, is experiencing layoffs after a canceled project.

After seeing staff members tweet about their departure, we reached out to 5th Cell to confirm that staff have been let go, at least temporarily due to a project cancelation. The canceled project was upcoming mobile game Scribblenauts Fighting Words.

5th Cell has issued the following statement:

Unfortunately, due to a project cancellation, we have had to let go of 45 of our very talented staff members today.

Layoffs aren’t something we take lightly and we’d like to thank all our employees for all the hard work and dedication over the years.

5th Cell as a company is not closing down, but our focus right now is 100% on helping our staff make the transition to other external opportunities. If we haven’t already reached out, any interested employer can reach us at jobs@5thcell.com.

This news comes just after 5th Cell's recent failed Fig campaign for the game Anchors in the Drift.

Our Take
Hearing about layoffs is always unfortunate, and it looks like 5th Cell hasn't had an easy run lately by not meeting its Fig goal and having its latest project canceled. This doesn't mean the company is shuttering, but it's unclear what the future will hold. Our thoughts are with those affected by these layoffs.
