CD Projekt: New Game This Year, More Than 20 Million Copies Of The Witcher Games Sold

by Mike Futter on Mar 10, 2016 at 06:45 AM

CD Projekt has announced its strategic plans for the coming five years, giving us an idea of where the studio is heading. It also took a moment to look about at goals for The Witcher series set five years ago and where the franchise is now.

In 2011, CD Project expected that it’s games would have sold 10 million copies. To-date, the trilogy of Witcher games have sold twice that.

The company also suggests that it will be releasing a new game this year. It isn’t Cyberpunk 2077 which will arrive no earlier than 2017.

The developer says that it’s “a new type of video game format previously unexplored by the studio.” With mobile games already under its belt (there have been two tied into The Witcher franchise), we’re left to wonder where this venture will take CD Projekt.

The company also has set its sights on becoming one of the top three video game developers in the world. It will continue to focus on RPGs as part of that core business.

“We have long ago decided to specialize in the role-playing game (RPG) genre,” reads the company’s strategy document. “RPGs are among the most challenging videogame projects from the creative point of view and for many years we have been adding to our pool of knowledge and experience. Each new release gives us more ideas for future projects.”

Our Take
CD Projekt’s approach to games, giving them extended cycles in order to get things right, is paying off. However, it’s important to note that the company’s GoG.com business helps make that possible. CD Projekt has set up the structure that companies like EA and its Origin storefront are trying to achieve.
