Total War: Warhammer Delayed Until May In Part To Give Reviewers More Time

by Mike Futter on Mar 08, 2016 at 03:23 AM

Creative Assembly needs a bit more time crafting its take on The Old World. Total War: Warhammer has been delayed out of April into May.

In a post on the game’s forums, the studio says it needs another month. The move is partially to give reviewers enough time to present a fair perspective on the game.

So first things first: we’re moving the launch of the game back by a month to 24 May 2016. Listen – we don’t want to rush this. This could be the best TW game we’ve made and we want reviewers to have enough time to play it thoroughly before launch, so that you get a fair review from a reviewer you trust. Hopefully, you can understand that – and of course we apologise for any hassle this might cause you.

Additionally, Creative Assembly has announced that this is the first Total War game to require a 64-bit operating system. The studio has issued new PC specs, including guidance on what you’ll need to get at least 60 frames-per-second out of the game.

If you’re tuning up your system to make the most of Total War: Warhammer, here’s what you’ll need (and what you can expect) at each of the different configuration levels.

PC Minimum Specifications:

[Expected around 15-25 FPS on campaign map and in a 1v1, 20 units vs 20 units battle, default graphics preset set to “Low”]

  • Operating System: Windows 7 64Bit
  • Processor: Intel® Core™ 2 Duo 3.0Ghz
  • RAM: 3GB*
  • Hard Drive: 35 GB
  • Video Card: (DirectX 11) AMD Radeon HD 5770 1024MB | NVIDIA GTS 450 1024MB | Intel HD4000 @720P
  • (*)PC integrated graphics chipsets require 4GB ram, e.g. Intel HD series

PC Recommended Specifications:

[Expected around 45-55 FPS on campaign map and in a 1v1, 20 units vs 20 units battle, default graphics preset set to “High”]

  • Operating System: Windows 7/8.1/10 64Bit
  • Processor: Intel® Core™ i5-4570 3.20GHz
  • RAM: 8 GB
  • Hard Drive: 35 GB
  • Video Card: (DirectX 11) AMD Radeon R9 270X 2048MB | NVIDIA GeForce GTX 760 2048MB @1080P

PC 60fps+ Specifications:

[Expected 60 FPS+ on campaign map and in a 1v1, 20 units vs 20 units battle, default graphics preset set to “Ultra”]

  • Operating System: Windows 7/8.1/10 64Bit
  • Processor: Intel® Core™ i7-4790K 4.0 GHz
  • RAM: 8 GB

Note that even at the ultra settings, there are still things you can turn on that are more demanding. These include depth of field effects and screen space reflections.

Our Take
There are a lot of reasons to delay a game, but I’ve rarely heard a developer suggest they want to give reviewers more time. My interpretation is that the game isn’t anticipated for completion until close to the original April 28 release, which would have indeed been a crunch for reviewers tackling such a large game.
