Epic Pushing VR Development Forward With Unreal Engine VR Editor

by Mike Futter on Feb 05, 2016 at 04:51 AM

Epic has some big plans for GDC next month in San Francisco. The developer behind one of the most widely-used game engines, Unreal Engine, is showing off its early work designed to make virtual reality creation more intuitive.

In a new video, Epic CEO Tim Sweeney and shows off how Unreal Engine’s VR Editor can be used to develop inside a virtual environment. The editor is compatible with both Valve and HTC’s Vive and Oculus Touch controllers.

As you can see in the video above, designing in VR with motion controls allows for seemingly intuitive manipulation. Being inside the immersive environment will allow developers to have a better understanding of scale while they are placing objects.

Epic will be providing more information on March 16 at GDC. At that time, the company will announce when the VR Editor will be available. For more on virtual reality, check out our January issue.

Our Take
I'm eager to see more of what Epic is planning and how developers feel about leaving their regular modes of input behind. This has enormous potential, but only if it's as intuitive in practice as it seems in the video.
