The Witcher 2 Is The Big New Xbox One Backward Compatible Game

by Mike Futter on Jan 21, 2016 at 02:33 AM

Last night, we reported that The Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings was suddenly free on Xbox Live. Now we understand why that might have happened (and you can still grab it through February 5).

CD Projekt's first console installment for the series leads the list of Xbox One backward compatible games for January. The rest of the list isn't quite as high profile, and you can check it out below.

  • The Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings
  • Sam & Max Save the World
  • Aegis Wing
  • Counter-Strike: GO
  • Age of Booty
  • Space Giraffe
  • Soulcalibur
  • Skullgirls
  • Jeremy McGrath’s Offroad
  • Small Arms

We're still waiting on a few promised titles, including BioShock, BioShock Infinite, Call of Duty: Black Ops, and Halo Wars. The Witcher 2 is the only game from the Top 25 most requested titles to make an appearance this month.

If you'd like to vote for games to be added, you can do so on Microsoft's website. Moving forward, Microsoft will be releasing backward compatible titles as they are available instead of waiting for a monthly drop.

Our Take
This list isn't terribly compelling aside from The Witcher 2, but I'm heartened to hear that we'll be seeing new additions more frequently. I'm still hoping that Microsoft irons out whatever is keeping multi-disc titles from being supported. Bring on Mass Effect 2 and 3 for backward compatibility!
