Adult Swim Games announced on Twitter today that a new game based on the sci-fi animated show Rick and Morty called Pocket Mortys would be hitting mobile devices on January 14. The show is about a weird, alcohol-guzzling scientist who ropes his grandson into going on wacky (and often dangerous) adventures through various universes, often mixing silly humor with a surprising amount of bleak drama.

The tweet had a single gif attached showing off a small slice of gameplay. While there aren't really any details yet outside of its release date and that it will be, according to Adult Swim Games' Senior Producer Chris Johnston, "free to download," the brief segment showcased suggests a Pokémon-esque game. You can see below how the player moves throughout the world, as well as a familiar battle system that pits our duo against monsters and clones:

The creators of the show, Dan Harmon (of Community fame) and Justin Roiland also showed off some footage from the game on their Twitter accounts:

This is the second mobile game about Rick and Morty to be released, with the first being a simple mobile game about popping balloons. This one, seemingly a lampoon of JRPGs, is probably going to be a bit more complex.

Our Take
A send-up of Pokémon by way of Rick and Morty sounds like a good time. However, "free to download" suggests that the game will likely have microtransactions which have a habit of dragging down otherwise enjoyable games.  Still, Adult Swim Games has published a number of enjoyable oddball games like Westerado: Double Barreled and Robot Unicorn Attack, so this could be another fun title.
